Manoj married Pratima Rout on 16 February 2004 and has a 5 year old son, Swayam Sekhar (Rajan) He loves reading and writing articles in newspaper, is a vegetarian and chooses an ascetic lifestyle. He decided to work for the society against his family wishes to carry his family business.
Initial years
with Ana Hazare
From the beginning, Manoj was averse to the caste system that is still rampant in the Hindu society. From very childhood he was inclined towards social work and community service. He was associated with Junior Red Cross Society when he was reading in class sixth. With friends, he used to clean village ponds and construct village mud roads, planting fruit bearing trees etc.
When he entered high school, he became a volunteer of Bharat Scouts & Guides and was attending regularly the service camps in various places of the State.
In the early college days he was inspired by the works and teaching of Swami Vivekanada, the great youth icon of India. So he formed “Vivekananda Seva Sangh” in his village with few dedicated friends in which he held the position of the Secretary. The organization had taken up plantation drive in nearby villages, opened library in the villages, organizing talent competitions among the school students, sent relief for Lathur earthquake victims in 1991 etc.
During the college days he was associated with National Service Schemes (NSS), he used to attend different service camps in the remote villages and festivals.
Gandhian Ways
He was highly inspired by the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi through Pravina Desai, a close associate of Vinoba Bhave, left Odisha and stayed in Nivedita Nilayam Youth Centre at Wardha, Maharastra. There he learned deeply regarding the Indian freedom struggle, Gandhian Economics, Indian politics etc. Many living Gandhians were closely associated with him. Regularly attended Sevagram Ashram & Paunar Ashram programs. His learning at Wardha was indeed a great help to boost his commitment towards public service.
Eminent Gandhian Leaders of India
He left Wardha to join Gorakshya Satyagraha at Deonar, Mumbai. The satyagraha was called by Vinoba Bhave against cow slaughter. For a year he participated the satyagraha and arrested several times.
Mr Jena is presently holding an national executive member of Gandhi Global Family and Akhil Bharat Rachanatmak Samaj, both organisation formed by late Nirmala Deshpande, a close aide of Acharya Vinoba Bhave.
As a Social Motivator
with Late Nirmala Deshpande
The continuing poverty of Odisha was always a nightmare for him. He recalls Gandhiji when he visited Odisha first time in 1921 was deeply shaken seeing the abject poverty of its people. He declared Odisha’s poverty was epitome of India’s Poverty.
He decided to return to his State and work for the marginalised sections. So he joined Lutheran World Service(LWS) an international organization working for the development of rural & tribal upliftment. He had successfully dealt with many issues and engaged himself in relief and rehabilitation work during the super cyclone in Odisha the year 1999 and earthquake in Gujarat in 2001.
He formed an organization Vinoba Seva Pratisthan(VSP) in 2002 with likeminded committed people who believes in Gandhian way of development in which he held the position of  General Secretary. For the last few years, the organisation has been working in remote tribal areas in the areas of health, education, livelihood, governance, peace building, land rights etc. Under his dynamic leadership, the organization has also taken various advocacy programmes related to farmers suicide, resettlement and rehabilitation policies for displaced people, communal harmony etc.
On Human Rights Issues

Since 2006, Mr. Jena has been actively working on human rights issues. From 2006 to 2008 he worked in the European Union assistance project “National Project on Preventing Torture in India”.  He brought into light and advocated many atrocities cases and intervened more than 5000 cases in different human rights and legal aid forum or institutions and organized series of people’s tribunals.

The organization takes various programs for different stake holders in association with National Human Rights Commission, State Human Rights Commission, National Women Commission, State Women Commissions and other human rights bodies of national and international level.
Contribution to Civil Society
Odisha has placed in the bottom of human development index in India. The main reason he see lack of civil and political will of its leaders and people. The civil society leaders of the State united and formed Odisha Nagarika Samaj(ONAS) on 18th December 2009, a civil society coalition which he was given responsibility as Member Secretary. Under his leadership, the forum advocated many state and national issues like series of farmers suicide, scams, time bound delivery services, climate change action plan, lokayukta, larger youth participation in voting, polavaram project, forcefully displacement, Infrastructural development etc.
In the context of Kandhamal communal violence in the year 2007, the civil society leaders and peace activists of both State and nation came together to address the issue, they formed “Odisha Shanti o Sadbhavana Abhiyan(OSSA)” in which Mr Jena played a key role, held the position of Coordinator where the eminent persons like Prof Radhamohan, former information commissioner of Odisha and Dr Bhagbanprakash, presently advisor to Election Commission of India held as Convenor and Co-Convenor.
The continuous violence by Maoist and counter attack of the State hurts many peace loving people and Gandhian organisations of the State. To tackle this issue, they formed “Odisha Sarvodaya Samaj” in the year 2006 under the leadership of Dr Ratan Das, a renowned Bhoodan worker, Mr Jena was given responsibility of Coordinator. The forum had taken many peace initiatives and peaceful solution of many threatening issues.
